Julie Rice owns and operates Ascent Dog Training in Hillsborough, NC and has been certified as an instructor by the National Association of Canine Scentwork©. She has been teaching K9 Nosework™ classes since 2011 but has many years of experience teaching other dog sports such as Agility, Obedience and AKC Tracking for many different training facilities in the Triangle area of North Carolina.

Combining her interests in science, teaching and dog training, Julie pursued and graduated with distinction from the Karen Pryor Academy as a Certified Training Partner. She has also been accepted into the Certifying Official training program for the NACSW©. Julie has also accumulated hundreds of hours of in-person and online continuing education credits to maintain her certification status with the NACSW©

Julie also volunteers as a trainer with the Spotted Lantern Fly Citizen Science Project sponsored by Virginia Tech and Texas Tech which is investigating the use of sport scent detection dogs to identify the egg masses of this invasive insect species.

Julie received her BS degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from UNC-CH and worked for 22 years as a clinical laboratorian in the McClendon Clinical Laboratories at UNC-CH and for the Orange County Health Department in Hillsborough, NC. In 2012 Julie took early retirement to teach dog training full time.

Julie competes regularly with her own dogs in sport scent detection trials which allows her to stay current on developments in the sport. Her Parson Russell Terrier, Spriggans, competes at the Summit level in NACSW and at the Detective level in AKC and her German Shorthaired Pointer, Tristan, is working his way through NW3 (NACSW) and Masters (AKC) and her puppy, Gryffin, has just begun learning nose work.
