What is Canine Good Citizen?

The Canine Good Citizen program, as standardized by the American Kennel Club, is a method of assessing dogs in simulated situations they may encounter at home or in public spaces. The purpose of the assessment is to prepare dogs to be comfortable and polite when interacting with others.

During a Canine Good Citizen test, we’ll simulate the following scenarios:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger.
  • Sitting politely for petting.
  • Allowing basic grooming procedures.
  • Walking on a loose leash.
  • Walking through a crowd.
  • Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place.
  • Coming when called.
  • Reacting appropriately to walking by a dog and person.
  • Reacting appropriately to distractions.
  • Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner.

About Canine Good Citizen Day at Paws4ever

As a part of our month-long fall festival, PawsFest, Paws4ever is offering individual 30-minute Canine Good Citizen assessments on Oct. 17th. You’ll bring your dog to the Paws4ever Learning Center, a spacious training facility at Paws4ever, located at 6311 Nicks Rd. in Mebane, NC.

Even though it’s called a “test,” our Canine Good Citizen day is designed to be relaxed, fun, and informative. We will go through the sections of the CGC assessment one at a time. After the test is completed, we can talk discuss which parts (if any) were difficult for your dog and how you can work towards success in those areas.

Participation in Canine Good Citizen Day is free, but you must reserve your spot. Sign up for one of the “Canine Good Citizen Test” slots on our class registration form.

Though our Canine Good Citizen Day is mostly for learning & fun, if your dog passes the test, you can receive an official Canine Good Citizen certificate. The certificate is free, but donations are welcome to help offset the cost of filing your official paperwork with the American Kennel Club.

Because of COVID-19, masks are required. We will maintain social distance and implement rigorous cleaning practices. If you have a fever or any symptoms of illness, or know that you may have been exposed to COVID-19, we ask that you stay home.
